On March 20, the 220kV Weizhou Island Cross‑sea Power Grid Project of China Southern Power Grid was officially energized and put into service. With 44.8‑kilometer submarine cables laid, this is China’s first 220kV submarine cable fully adopting domestic insulating materials. Engineers accomplished the highly‑demanding "seabed threading" operation to bury cables precisely on complex seabed terrain.
Previously, Weizhou Island relied on on‑island diesel generators for isolated power supply, which suffered poor stability and high generation costs. After the submarine cable went live, the island was connected to the mainland main power grid, putting an end to its isolated grid operation. The project cuts annual carbon dioxide emissions by 4,318 tons and greatly lowers electricity costs for local homestays and tourism industries. Reserved interfaces are available for power transmission from Beibu Gulf offshore wind power, boosting the marine‑oriented economy of Guangxi Province.
